Diabetes Mellitus Puts You at Risk of Developing Erectile Dysfunction

Are you a male diabetic? then you are at risk of developing erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction can be described as the inability to attain and maintain penile erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Diabetes is one of the major causes although it can be caused by some other conditions.

Other causes of erectile dysfunction

1}-Drugs: use of certain drugs can lead to erectile dysfunction as a side effect for example anti hypertensives{methyldopa, reserpine, thiazides}, antidepressants{trycyclic antidepressants},anti psychotics{phenothiazine},anti androgen's{cimetidine, ketoconazole}.

CNS depressants{Barbitone, morphine},substance abuse{cocaine,amphetamine}

2}-Vascular diseases like hypertension, arteritis etc

3}-Endocrine diseases like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism etc

4}-Genitourinary causes like priaprism{abnormal, over sustained hyper turgid erection}, prostatitis{infection of the prostate},perineal prostactectomy{operation that involves the removal of the prostate gland}.

5}-Neurological diseases like spinal cord injury, spinal cord tumor, transverse myelitis.
Erectile dysfunction caused by diabetes in men is usually associated with increasing age, long duration of disease, poor glucose control, and appearance of other complications of diabetes like neuropathy and retinopathy.

Erectile dysfunction in diabetes progresses slowly and other symptoms of diabetes may be present.

There is often a poor quality of erection at the beginning of the disease which often results later into total failure of erection ,there is however no loss of libido.

There is loss of morning , nocturnal{night}and reflex erections in diabetes

Treatment of erectile dysfunction

Treatment includes

A} Psycho sexual counseling

Counseling is necessary in the management of erectile dysfunction as psycho sexual factors are often present in cases of erectile dysfunction.
Counseling often involves discussion of the quality and stability of your sexual relationships, it will also explore the expectations of the man and his partner. It will also help to deal with anxiety and relationship problems associated with erectile dysfunction. Sometimes drug treatment may be required for the treatment of severe depression.

B} Drugs

Certain drugs can be used to treat erection problems, these include:
a}Phosphodiesterase inhibitors-these group of drugs are often considered as first line therapy for erectile dysfunction, for example sidenafil{Viagra}, vardenafil, tadafil. Their use results in a higher frequency of successful attempts at sexual intercourse and a higher mean number of successful attempts at intercourse each month.

C} Self injection therapy

Intracavernosal injection:the cavernosum is the tissue of the penis and certain drugs can be injected directly into the penis tissue by the male diabetic. The problem with this is that the pain it causes at the injection site.

D} Intraurethral alprostadil this drug is inserted into the tip of the penis and pushed into the urethra with aid of a syringe, alprostadil is a prostaglandin E1 analogue.

E} Use of vacuum devices
External vacuum constrictive devices are cylinder like chambers that create a vacuum around the penis and this increases blood flow to the penis leading to erection.
Erection is then maintained by restricting outflow by placing a constricting band at the base of the penis.

F}Surgery
Surgical treatment is reserved for men who can not use or who have tried other forms of treatment that did not work for them. Surgical options include the implantation of devices in the penis and micro surgical re vascularisation{new blood vessels are surgically created in the penis}
Although erectile dysfunction is a common complication of diabetes, there are other genito-urinary complications that you need to be aware of.

Top Diabetes Prevention Diet

The incidence of diabetes has doubled over the past 10 years, and many people remain unaware that they have become victim to this silent killer disease. Millions of people are pre-diabetic, indicating a failing metabolism which will lead to full diabetes, typically in 6 months to 2 years’ time.
Surprisingly, the diagnosis of diabetes doesn't have the same impact on patients as other potentially lethal diseases, due to the subtle manifestation of symptoms before the disease progresses fully. Because of this, people are less likely to take diabetes seriously, placing them at high risk for heart disease and a host of debilitating diabetic complications.

Diabetes Doubles the Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke
Information from a study published in The Lancet finds that a diagnosis of diabetes doubles the risk of developing life-threatening events such as a heart attack or stroke. Type II diabetes is largely a disease caused by poor lifestyle choices and is perpetuated by a diet of processed junk foods which leads to complete metabolic dysfunction.
Fortunately, diabetes can be controlled and even reversed by following a strict meal plan which drastically limits high carbohydrate foods and sugary drinks. Many people have been able to minimize and resolve blood sugar surges and neuropathic complications by eliminating specific foods which create metabolic imbalance, and cut their risk of a heart attack in half.

Carbs Count, So Count Them

The most important thing to understand when working to prevent or treat Type II diabetes is that the low fat, high carb diet you've been prescribed by your health care professional is based on an ancient understanding of the disease and will promote disease progression. The only way to take charge of diabetes is to track and monitor every morsel of food you eat, and keep track of the carbohydrate count.

Carbs, regardless of the dietary source, cause blood sugar to rise and insulin resistance to develop. Once this metabolic imbalance begins, the only way to keep it on track is to severely limit carbohydrate intake. Fats and protein have a limited effect on blood sugar and actually help to flatten blood sugar spikes.

Target Less Than 100 Grams of Carbohydrates Each Day

Many people eat more than 100 grams of carbohydrates each meal, causing wild swings in post meal blood sugars which have been shown to lead to metabolic dysfunction, diabetes and serious complications. Limit carbs from all sources, including vegetables to no more than 30 grams each meal. You'll need to use nutritional tracking software to calculate carb counts. Weigh and measure everything and record it before you eat. Be accurate, as small deviations can create big blood sugar swings.

You'll find that to hit your target carbs for each meal, there's no room for junk foods, breads, pasta, sugared drinks, and even salad dressing which are pumped full of sugar. Make fresh vegetables the core of each meal and compliment with solid protein and fat sources from meats, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Check Blood Sugar after Each Meal

The only true way to know if you can tolerate more carbs is to test your blood sugar with an inexpensive meter. Check your reading 1 and 2 hours after eating, as this is when the highest blood sugar readings will be recorded. Make sure that your 1 hour reading is no higher than 140 mg/dl, and the 2 hour reading is below 120 mg/dl.

Readings above these levels indicate metabolic instability, and the need to lower your carbohydrate intake. Blood sugar readings above 140 mg/dl are associated a doubling of risk of heart attack and dangerous complications from kidney disease, blindness and nerve damage. Monitor your blood sugar after every meal, and soon you'll know exactly which foods cause the largest swings and must be avoided.

Diabetes cases will continue to double every decade, jeopardizing the lives of millions, unless people are educated to take control of their diet. The disease is in your control, and only you can determine how it progresses. Many people have shown that they can prevent and even treat diabetes by incorporating an ultra-low carb diet and monitoring blood sugar levels carefully after meals. Cut your risk of a heart attack and diabetic complications by taking charge of your diet and lifestyle.

Facts And Treatments Regarding Diabetes

Diabetes is considered a serious affection due to its permanent existence, procedures and moreover the complications that involves. Even though many people all over the world suffer from diabetes, the specialists haven t discovered yet the real source of its occurrence. It is very important to mention that people who suffer from diabetes should ask for medical help as soon as they notice changes in their body and unusual symptoms.
First of all, diabetes occurs when the beta cells in the pancreas which produce insulin are totally destroyed. As we know the food that we eat turns into glucose or sugar helping our body to use for energy. Once there aren't beta cells to produce insulin in order to transfer the glucose in the cells, the sugar remains in the blood and because the body cannot use sugar, it is spilled over into the urine and lost. Much more, diabetes can lead to severe health complications, such as heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, lower-extremity amputations and in many cases even death.
Secondly, people who notice certain symptoms which indicate the presence of diabetes should see a physician in order to receive a proper diagnosis. Some of the most common symptoms which indicate the presence of diabetes are: excessive hunger and thirst, frequent urination, dramatic weight loss, lack of energy, dry skin, wounds that heal very hard and even nausea and stomach pains, symptoms which usually occur in type 1 diabetes.
In addition to this, there are two types of diabetes which are quoted from the National Diabetes Fact Sheet: National estimates and general information on diabetes in the United States (Centres for Disease Control an Prevention. Atlanta, GA: US Department of Health and Human Services, 1997). Much more, type 1 diabetes tends to be more serious than type 2 diabetes and usually occurs during the childhood.
Type 1 diabetes also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or Juvenile-Onset diabetes, is a common disease in children and may account for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. The factors which cause type 1 diabetes aren’t entirely known but it has been considered that genetic predisposition and environmental factors, such as viral infections might have an important influence. On the other hand, type 2 diabetes also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes. This type of diabetes may appear due to certain factors, such as older age, obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, family history of diabetes, physical inactivity, prior history of gestational diabetes and other factors. It has been considered that certain races and ethnicities, such as African Americans, American Indians, and Latino Americans are more exposed to get type 2 diabetes than other people.
Gestational diabetes seem to occur in 2% to 5% of all pregnancies but the good thing is that usually disappears when the woman gives birth. Even  though a woman who had suffered of gestational diabetes and healed when the pregnancy was over, might develop type 2 diabetes in the future.
Furthermore, there are other types of diabetes which may account for 1% to 2% of all known cases of diabetes and they occur from genetic syndromes, surgeries, drugs, malnutrition, infections and much other affection.
Medical treatments for diabetes are vital for the body and include important changes in the lifestyle. Diabetes treatments tend to advance in a short time and their role is to maintain blood glucose near normal levels at all times. For instance, type 1 diabetes, the most severe type requires a wide range of procedures. People who suffer from this type of diabetes need a special treatment which includes: administration of insulin injections, home blood glucose testing several times a day, certain, calculated diet and also planned physical exercises. Even though, type 2 diabetes is not so serious like type 1, it also requires a strict treatment which consists in special diets, physical activities, home blood glucose testing, oral medication and 40% of the cases require insulin injections.
The causes of type 1 diabetes are not entirely identified; it is believed that it occurs to genetic predisposition or certain viruses which destroy the beta cells in the pancreas. Some important factors which may develop type 2 diabetes are lack of activity and overweight.
In order to take care of the people who suffer from diabetes, the diabetes community offers, pursued by the US Department of Health and Human Services offer three options: prevent diabetes, cure diabetes and moreover taking better care of people with diabetes to prevent dramatic complications. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is involved in the research of curing type 1 and type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention focuses through their programmes on being sure that the proven science is put into daily practice for people with diabetes.
All in all, even though diabetes tends to be an incurable illness, the science tries to discover and consequently to utilize in practice several methods to cure diabetes, such as pancreas transplantation, artificial pancreas development, islet cell transplantation and genetic manipulation. However, until these approaches become reality they need to pass through a series of investigations like preventing immune rejection, finding an adequate number of insulin cells, keeping cells alive and many others.

Simple Home Remedies For Diabetes

You may be surprised to know that aside from prescription medicines, there are also many home remedies for diabetes that are readily available at home or in many local grocery stores. Before moving further, it would be better if you get a glimpse and broader understanding of diabetes and insulin.

Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus is the medical condition characterized by inability of the body to break down sugar resulting excessive sugar (glucose) level in the blood. The condition is marked by lost of energy either due to incapability to produce the hormone insulin or resistance to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that has the ability to lower glucose levels in the blood. Those who have diabetes experience increased hunger, increased thirst, and increased urination. Serious complications of diabetes may result to heart disease, vision problems, and a lot more. The condition is long-term and in some cases can be life-threatening.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is formerly termed as insulin-dependent diabetes, marked by the body's inability to produce insulin. Usual onset of this type is during childhood or early adult life; usually treated with insulin injections and dietary changes.

Type 2 diabetes is marked by insufficient production of hormone insulin or the insulin available does not function effectively in the body; usual onset is beyond the age 40.
