Great Ways to Make Your Bathroom Appear Larger

The bathroom is often the most neglected room in the home. When you are buying a property, you would probably check the size of the bedroom, the living room and perhaps even the hobby room. Most people make the mistake of thinking that bathrooms are just meant to be used for a short while everyday and therefore do not focus on their size. Little do they realize that, bathrooms are meant not just for hygiene, but that, they can also make the person feel relaxed.

So what do you do, if you are stuck with small bathrooms? Do not worry. There are ways in which you can make them look bigger. Here's how.

Utilize Mirrors to Provide an Illusion of Space

Mirrors not only reflect light but also echo a sense of space, giving the effect of doubling the area where they are installed. As these can be simply fixed on the bathroom wall, they are unlikely to take up any extra space. But they still increase the illumination and ambience of the surrounding walls. In fact, they will create an illusion of extra space in your bathrooms. You may keep a large mirror opposite to the light source in the bathroom, or fix two smaller mirrors one facing the other. However, there is one word of caution - cover the backside of the mirror with some thick paint, as the surface will get affected when it comes in contact with hot water vapor inside the bathroom.

Use Bright Light Sources

Remove the old incandescent bulb from its socket and install a new pair of wall socket lighting fixtures, each having 60 to 75 watt bulbs. Use transparent globes instead of the usual frosted ones for getting better light. But remember, they should be mounted at least three feet apart and at eye level. As the lights spread all over your bathrooms, reaching all the corners, the area will appear to spread too. Also, consider using condensed fluorescent light sources to reduce your utility bills. Ceiling recessed lights in smaller bathrooms also make them look larger in size.

Remove All Clutter and the Bathroom Will Look Bigger

This is the easiest to do. Just get rid of all the clutter that has undersized the bathroom's useful areas. Remove nail brushes, nail enamel removing lotions, rejected toothbrushes, spent-up toothpaste and shaving cream, while storing the essential ones in a small closet above the sink. Even a small bathroom will look larger when it is free of clutter.

Use Pastel Shades In a Small Bathroom to Make It Look Big

Never use deep colors in bathrooms, irrespective of whether it is small or big. Deeper shades rob the sunlight's brighter hues, leaving darker tones behind. Use lighter colors instead to make the bathroom look bigger. If you are using wallpaper, follow the same principle too. Go for simple and clean designs instead of jumbled up color schemes.
